LANSING – State Representative Gabe Leland (D-Detroit) has been named Chair of the House Committee on Urban Policy for the 95th Legislature. Leland will also serve on the Great Lakes and Environment Committee, the New Economy and Quality of Life Committee, and the Transportation Committee.
"It is an honor to be named Chair of this committee that will be critical to improving the lives of millions across the state," said Leland, who represents the 10th House District. "Our urban areas have been severely neglected, and in the coming months, we will pursue aggressive policy options that will create job opportunities, grow our economy and improve the quality of life for our residents. The time has come to attract people back to Michigan's urban centers."
Leland, who recently begun his third term, has played a key role in addressing urban issues during his time in the House. He has fought to stem foreclosures by cracking down on predatory lenders and worked to address the difficulties that urban residents have in obtaining insurance. Leland's priorities for the 95th Legislature include the creation of new, good-paying jobs now for Michigan residents and dramatically increasing access to health care and higher education.
"We need a comprehensive urban policy in this state," Leland said. "For too long, people have felt that Lansing wasn't working for them. I will work tirelessly with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to improve our core cities and bring about the positive change that Michigan needs."
