LANSING – Newly-elected State Representative Gabe Leland (D-Detroit) will be officially sworn in as legislator for the 10th District in the Michigan House of Representatives during a ceremony in the House Chamber at 12 p.m. noon on Wednesday, January 12th, 2005.
Clerk of the House Gary L. Randall will call on the 110 members of the Michigan House to take the oath of office in a constitutionally mandated event that kicks off the 2005-2006 Legislative Session.
"My family has a long and proud history of serving the people of Detroit," said Leland, the son of veteran lawmaker Sen. Burt Leland (D-Detroit). "I am going to continue that legacy by working every day to improve the quality of life for Michigan's children, working families and senior citizens."
Among the issues that Leland plans to address are strengthening public education, creating good jobs and fighting against outsourcing, lowering the cost of health care and prescription drugs and eliminating the punishing practice of red-lining.
"It is an honor to be able to serve my community," Leland added. "I am committed to creating legislation that benefits the citizens of my district."
